Do you have PCOS? Take care of your physical condition and mood

Polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS is one of the most common hormonal disorders among young women. It is estimated that it may affect between 5 and 20% of the population. Women with this condition should take special care to maintain a healthy body weight and a healthy lifestyle. This will have an impact on fertility, but also lower the risk of depression and lowered mood. These conclusions were reached by Korean scientists on the basis of analysis of more than 26 thousand cases.

PCOS causes hormonal abnormalities, as a result of which ovulation and cycle regularity are disturbed. For this reason, if you are trying to have a baby, it is worth being under the care of a doctor. A little medical help often makes getting pregnant more likely. However, women with PCOS may be at greater risk for mood disorders and depression. This is especially true for overweight or obese women who rarely exercise.

Researchers in Korea analyzed more than 26,000 cases of women diagnosed with PCOS. Many variables were taken into account, including health, smoking, socio-economic status, place of residence, blood glucose and cholesterol levels, etc. The aim was to capture factors that might interact with the risk of depression.

Women with an elevated (above 25) BMI (body mass index) were more likely to have depressive states and mood disorders. At the same time, the studied women who took care of a normal body weight, played sports, and followed a proper diet were less likely to have these types of problems.

Most women find out they have PCOS in their 20s and 30s, when they start thinking about having a family. Some go to a specialist because of skin problems (acne, excessive hair). The Korean study indicates that attention should also be paid to the psychological condition of women with PCOS. Encouraging them to live a healthy lifestyle, change their eating habits, and reduce their weight is a part of supporting and preventing depression.
